Yadha Muru Partnership Builds Momentum

Students, educators and community leaders came together on Thursday Island this month as the Yadha Muru partnership entered its second year, delivering an inspiring week focused on STEM education, culture and future pathways for young people in the Torres Strait.

Visitors from St Thomas More College and St Finbarr's School joined staff and students from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School for a series of activities designed to connect classroom learning with real-world challenges and opportunities in the region.

The week featured a STEM Mad Boot Camp, cultural experiences, stakeholder forums and island visits, with students exploring practical applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in areas such as environmental management, healthcare, transport, border protection and community sustainability.

A highlight of the program was a stakeholder panel featuring respected local leaders and professionals including health representatives, Elders, cultural educators, law enforcement and environmental specialists. Students heard firsthand about the skills and knowledge required to support and strengthen communities across the Torres Strait.

The partnership aims to provide students with authentic learning experiences while helping them understand the growing opportunities available within northern Australia and the Torres Strait region.

School leaders said the week demonstrated how meaningful STEM education can be when grounded in culture, community and practical problem-solving.

“Students are far more engaged when they can see how learning connects directly to the lives of people around them,” organisers said. “This partnership is about preparing young people for the future while valuing the wisdom, identity and strengths that already exist within our communities.”

Visitors also praised the hospitality, confidence and engagement of local students throughout the week, with many describing the program as a powerful example of collaboration between schools and community.

Community support played a major role in the success of the event, with local organisations, Elders, stakeholders and volunteers contributing their time, knowledge and cultural guidance across the week’s activities.

As Yadha Muru continues to grow, we hope the partnership will further strengthen pathways into employment, leadership and innovative industries for young people in the Torres Strait.
