Belonging from the Beginning

We are deeply committed to ensuring that every transition in a child’s educational journey is smooth, supportive, and positive for both students and their families. Particular care is given to key entry points, especially into Prep and Year 1, where strong foundations are essential. Across Terms 3 and 4, we offer a comprehensive transition program that allows children to become familiar with their new environment, build relationships with staff and peers, and develop confidence before their first official day. At the same time, families are supported with clear communication, opportunities to connect, and guidance to ensure a settled and successful start.

We also recognise the unique context of our Hammond Island families and provide tailored transition support to ensure continuity of learning and wellbeing. This includes close collaboration with families, staff, and the wider community to make each step of the transition process thoughtful and responsive to individual needs.

As students progress through our school, we continue to prioritise strong pathways into the next stage of their education. Families can be confident that their children are well prepared for a range of high-quality Catholic education options in Cairns and beyond. This includes access to respected Catholic secondary schools for day students, as well as a range of reputable boarding-school pathways. Our focus is on equipping each student with the academic, social, and personal foundations needed to confidently pursue these opportunities and thrive in their future learning environments.

Transition Days Program

At Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, we recognise that a strong start is essential for every child. Our Purposeful Transition Program is carefully designed to support students and families as they begin or continue their journey with us.

Across Term 3 and Term 4, we offer a series of five structured transition experiences. These are intentionally graduated, allowing students to build confidence, familiarity, and a sense of belonging over time.

For our new Prep and Year 1 students, four transition days provide a gentle and supportive introduction to school life. The program begins with short, family-friendly sessions and gradually increases in duration, helping students become comfortable with their new environment, routines, and teachers.

Transition Day 1 (Prep) – (1 hour) A relaxed introduction for students and families to meet staff and explore the learning environment.

Transition Day 2 – Learning Showcase (Whole School) An opportunity to experience a whole-school event and see learning in action.

Transition Day 3 (Prep & Year 1) – (1 hour) Students begin engaging in classroom routines and activities.

Transition Day 4 (Prep & Year 1) – (2 hours) Extended time in class to build confidence, independence, and connections.

Kirriri Transition – A dedicated session supporting students and families from Kirriri, strengthening connection and readiness for the transition to Waiben.

The program concludes with a day specifically for currently enrolled students:

Transition Day 5 – “Bump It Up Day” (Whole School, 2 hours)
Students spend time in their next year level, building excitement and familiarity for the year ahead.

Our transition experiences are designed not only to introduce students to the classroom, but also to immerse them in the life of the school, including whole-school events and community connections.

We believe this intentional and supportive approach ensures every child begins the new school year with confidence, readiness, and a strong sense of belonging.
