Faithful Beginnings
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish offers a sacramental program that invites children and families into a deeper relationship with Jesus and the life of the Church. Grounded in parish and school life, the program prepares students to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation through prayer, learning, and active participation in the community.
Preparation is a shared journey between the parish, school, and family. Parents are supported as the first educators in faith, while students engage in meaningful, age-appropriate formation that helps them understand and live the sacraments in their daily lives. The program fosters a strong sense of belonging, connection, and faith across our island communities.
The program is celebrated across Thursday Island and Hammond Island, reflecting the richness of Torres Strait culture and Catholic tradition. It is a time of growth and celebration, where young people are supported by their families, schools, and parish as they take the next step in their faith journey.
Dates:
The sacramental program is typically held once each year during the season of Lent (Term 1), concluding with a Mass celebrated by the Bishop during the Easter season or on the feast of Pentecost.
Eligibility:
Students in Years 3 to 6 who have been baptized are eligible to participate. Families seeking Baptism for their child are warmly encouraged to make contact, as preparation and celebration of this sacrament can also be arranged.
Enquiries should be directed to Assistant Principal Religious Education, Mrs. Hannah Coburn at: hcoburn@cns.catholic.edu.au

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Kaurareg people, the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which our school is built, the first to meet, learn, and celebrate here. We honour their enduring custodianship and the care they continue to give to this place. We respect their history and stories, which continue to sustain and inspire all who call this place home. We turn to God, Creator of all, who gives us strength and wisdom, guiding us to discern and pursue a better way in all that we do.
There are 10 weeks in Term 2
